How to recover Mac data when faced with directory corruption issues

Mac operating systems has its own set of system files, configuration files, system preferences, library files etc and all these files are very important in terms of proper functioning of the system. If due to virus attack, sudden system shut down or any such reason, any of these critical system files gets deleted or corrupted, then Mac OS X fails to boot leaving all your data in the hard drive inaccessible.
